How do technicians at an engineering company keep one billion people moving every day? With IBM Watson’s analysis of IoT data sent to the IBM Cloud, technicians can solve potential elevator and escalator issues before they happen. This is engineering to the power of IBM. This is you to the power of IBM.

Ideally IBM sells Watson and employs the elevator mechanic. Then Watson can periodically "predict" malfunction of the elevator in order to secure the mechanic's income.

(1) We put sensors to monitor temperature, pressure and vibration at multiple points. (2) Convey the readings to a remote location (3) Compare the readings against pre-defined criteria to predict failure. This technology is at least 20 years old. What is new here?

Just phenomenal! AI is getting more advanced per Moore's Law.

I thought Watson was supposed to just recommend a maintenance for the elevator, not make the call by itself :P

What is this? Some sort of pre-crime but with elevator breakdowns. This is both silly and completely unrealistic on several levels. As a person who works on elevators for a living, there is no way for any program to "predict" when a shutdown is going to occur. At most it can notify someone when there is a breakdown. And there are already controllers that can do that. Plus, I don't think any building owner would want a tech to just show up without being notified. Especially if it's a billable call.

If Watson was so intuitive, why didn't it notify the guard desk?
