I spent a day in Oslo before traveling to Svalbard, and noticed that there were Teslas everywhere. Upon further investigation, I learned that the Norwegian government heavily incentivizes ownership of electric cars: Tesla doesn't pay a sales tax on the models it sells, electric car owners are exempt from automobile tolls, and they can charge their vehicles for free. The catch is that Norway funds these initiatives through its sovereign wealth fund, which is almost entirely comprised of profits from Norway's oil and fossil fuel exports.

Vox Borders is a new international series focused on telling the human stories that emerge from lines on the map. Johnny will travel to six border locations to produce a final set of documentaries. While he travels he'll release dispatches on YouTube and Facebook documenting his experiences. Learn more: http://www.vox.com/borders-dispatch

Hey everyone: this dispatch video is part of the Vox Borders project. I'm visiting six places around the world to investigate the human impact of borders, and those six videos will be released in fall 2017. In the meantime I'm making these vlog style shorts.

If you want to follow my travels, the best way to do it is following my FB page: www.facebook.com/johnnyharrisvox
and signing up for the newsletter at www.vox.com/borders-email. I'll be asking for video ideas, feedback on the project, and answering questions as it unfolds.

I wanna live in Norway now...

Government incentives, yes, but part is also that electric plugs at home parking spots were already common. Diesel cars, which have been common in Norway for decades, need to keep the engine block warmer than the routine - 20C temps, so there are often plugs by each parking spot.
Howzer The man
I'm thinking of getting a tesla S as a second car.
Jonny Ogg
The second one he saw in the video, why did it make an exhaust noise???
its like an unprofessional vsauce XD
Um. Here in Seattle I see several everyday heading to work and back. Nothing special about Norway.

Oil in the economy
Electric cars on the streets
Americans love their big, "practical", gas-guzzling, need a step-ladder for grandma pick-up trucks.
29% NEVER EVER will you see that happen in the US.
If gas were a $102 a gallon, Americans would still have their FULL SIZE trucks.
Ponderer Of Pointless Dreams
Norway is doing a better job than us.
Kai Marcad
They sell oil to other countries and keep their own country green. OMG I'm laughing so hard XD
Luke De G
0:26 doesn't notice the Camaro....
I live in Norway oooooooooooool
Marcus Ly
If everyone would trade their cars for electric cars could possibly increase the global warming effect =/ If we take resources to buy something else even though the car you have now is perfectly fine. You are using even more of the earth's resources.

If you 100% MUST buy a new car, go for electric, not going to stop you there but don't throw away a perfectly functioning car if you actually care for the earth.
It’s cheaper for them to run electric, also they are highly into cleaning the environment and they weekly go to beaches and clean up and same with their streets
The country's state owned oil company has oil interests all over the world, not so much to do with environment as it does with what source of energy is cheapest(gov't subsidy which is hypocrisy) in Norway.
Sovereign wealth fund, they exploit and steal from other countries and make sure their country has clean air - hypocrites!
Not only in Norway, 7/10 taxi’s @ Schiphol NL, are Tesla’s.
Also loads of normal consumers have Tesla’s.
Ugh eletric cars can be trown in the water where they should be
norway is so extremely rich.
It's the same over here tesla's everywhere these days. Went to visit my parents the other week noticed half of their neighbours now have tesla's on their driveways. I think its mostly lease cars, why not try something new and different when your boss is paying for it right.
Joshua Kumar
Where are the people ? The streets are almost empty.
Dan Paveley
At 0:36 what the hell is making that noise? Cos obviously it can't be the Tesla.
Jøran Ekse
its not 70k usd here, its more

Esaiselvan govindasami
I want to see them

Then you go further north in Norway and find a tiny percentage electric cars, because there are almost zero public power stations for cars. If you need to charge, you will have to be at home. The further north you get at least, I don't know how big electric cars are in mid-Norway, but Northern-Norway it's not too common to see the EL licence plate.
Patrick McCourt
Is the sound effect at 0:27 seconds fake?

Norway are always at least a decade ahead of the rest of the world, that's why I love that so much
Dr. Wayne Manzo
I agree with my other comment!
Meh. The only car that I got exicted about was the yellow Camaro at 0:27. It's probably the only car that makes a sound here.

it looks so clean everywhere
Halvor 27
I am from Norway and the main reason We all are driving electric cars is because the fuel price is so high. It’s actually the highest in the world with a price of about $10 per gallon
Yaseen Kutbi
Tesla's are innovative, interesting, and possibly even revolutionary.
but they are not beautiful at all, they are a discordant mess of conflicting designs.
Such a beautiful country
Anyone loved the irony of the Camaro reving when he talks about the Tesla being all electric?
Zpeed Sketch Channel
Tesla aren't REAL cars
Will Sandifer
Anyone know the song starting at 1:26? It’s also in the drone footage over the waterfall
Johaima Panumpang
