Los Angeles, South Central. 1992 explodierte hier die Gewalt. Längst sind die Ruinen abgetragen, doch investieren und aufbauen will keiner. Das reiche Amerika hat das Elendsviertel schnell wieder vergessen. In diesem Stadtteil ist nichts zu spüren von der glitzernden Filmmetropole, deren Skyline wenige Kilometer entfernt in den Himmel ragt. In den Slums regiert die Angst vor den Banden.
Sabine Christiansen und Theo Baitz haben mit den Menschen in der schwarzen Gemeinde gesprochen, die versuchen, mit Eigeniniative etwas zu ändern. Sie treffen Tony Bogard, den ehemaligen Gangsterboss, der einen Waffenstillstand zwischen den großen Gangs mit ausgehandelt hat. Er will jetzt den Jungen helfen, eine Ausbildung und einen Job zu bekommen. Und sie treffen Gloria, den "Engel vom South Park". So nennen sie die Obdachlosen; denn Gloria ist der einzige Mensch, der sich wirklich um sie kümmert. Jedes Wochenende kocht und verteilt sie Mahlzeiten an die Armen. Mehr als die Hälfte ihrer Rente gibt sie dafür aus.
