Respighi: 6 Pieces for Piano (Scherbakov) Resphigi is famed primarily as a master orchestrator, but it seems that the same vivid awareness of timbral colour which served him so well in the Roman Trilogy, Ancient Airs and Dances, and The Birds led him to write some remarkably effective piano music. The 6 pieces for piano, written relatively early in Respighi’s career, show him deftly deploying a wide range of pianistic textures to magical effect. Scherbakov delivers a wonderful performance – perfect dynamic control, crystalline melodic lines, and some very intelligent handling of multi-layered textures (notice how he slyly modifies the big rolled chords in the nocturne, for instance).

00:00 – Valse Caressante. Lilting and quintessentially salon-esque.
03:26 – Canone. A canon at the octave. Rhythmically playful, as the trailing voice is two beats behind the leading. Starts off rather inward and reticent, before attaining a kind of luminous trepidation when it moves into Eb min. Then a swift move into D, triumphant, before returning into G min. Interesting to note how the voices are placed – at first the leading voice is in the RH, then both voices are in the RH, then they switch places in the D section.
06:10 – Notturno. The emotional centrepiece of the set, and a minor masterpiece. A neverending melody poised above delicately shifting thirds. Impressionistic, with occasional drifts of aeolian colour.
10:14 – Minuetto. A sly minuet whose strong third-beat accents make it sound like it’s in 3/2 time. At 10:21, a passage in pleasingly archaic Renaissance-era fauxbourdon (melody harmonized with notes a 6th and 4th below), contrasting with the dorian-to-the-point-of-sounding-like-the-whole-tone-scale colour of the middle section. The chromatic LH voice in the middle section supplies an unexpected undertone of grating menace.
13:42 – Studio. Shimmering, combining distinctly Romantic harmony with impressionist figuration. Some echoes of Chopin and Lyapunov (maybe even Alkan).
15:16 – Intermezzo – Serenata. A gorgeous melody, occasionally gently nudged aside by occasional bits of filigree.

Maurice Ravel - Miroirs "Miroirs" (Reflections) is a suite for solo piano written by French impressionist composer Maurice Ravel between 1904 and 1905, first performed by Ricardo Viñes in 1906.
Around 1900, Maurice Ravel joined a group of innovative young artists, poets, critics, and musicians referred to as Les Apaches or "hooligans", a term coined by Ricardo Viñes to refer to his band of "artistic outcasts". To pay tribute to his fellow artists, Ravel began composing Miroirs in 1904 and finished it the following year. Movements 3 and 4 were subsequently orchestrated by Ravel, while Movement 5 was orchestrated by Percy Grainger, among other.
Miroirs has five movements, each dedicated to a member of Les Apaches:
1. "Noctuelles" ("Night Moths") - Dedicated to Léon-Paul Fargue, Noctuelles is a highly chromatic work, maintaining a dark, nocturnal mood throughout. The middle section is calm with rich, chordal melodies, and the recapitulation takes place a fifth below the first entry.
2. "Oiseaux tristes" ("Sad Birds") - Dedicated to Ricardo Viñes, this movement represents a lone bird whistling a sad tune, after which others join in. The rambunctious middle section is offset by a solemn cadenza which brings back the melancholy mood of the beginning.
3. "Une barque sur l'océan" ("A boat on the Ocean") - Dedicated to Paul Sordes, the piece recounts a small boat as it sails upon the waves of the ocean. Arpeggiated sections and sweeping melodies imitate the flow of ocean currents. It is the longest piece of the set, and, with the exception of Alborada del Gracioso, the most technically difficult.
4. "Alborada del gracioso" ("The Gracioso's Aubade") - Dedicated to Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi, Alborada is a technically challenging piece that incorporates Spanish musical themes into its complicated melodies.
5. "La vallée des cloches" ("The Valley of Bells") - Dedicated to Maurice Delage, the piece evokes the sounds of various bells through its use of sonorous harmonies.

A thrilling orchestral suite by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), based on music from the 1895 opera of the same name. The plot of the opera follows the short story "Christmas Eve" from Nikolai Gogol's "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka". The same story also formed the basis of Tchaikovsky's operas "Vakula the Smith" and "Cherevichki".

The Best of Mendelssohn Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (3 February 1809 – 4 November 1847), born and widely known as Felix Mendelssohn, was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music and chamber music. His best-known works include his Overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio Elijah, the overture The Hebrides, his mature Violin Concerto, and his String Octet. The melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is also his. Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words are his most famous solo piano compositions.

A grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, Felix Mendelssohn was born into a prominent Jewish family. He was brought up without religion until the age of seven, when he was baptised as a Reformed Christian. Felix was recognised early as a musical prodigy, but his parents were cautious and did not seek to capitalise on his talent.

Mendelssohn enjoyed early success in Germany, and revived interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, notably with his performance of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. He became well received in his travels throughout Europe as a composer, conductor and soloist; his ten visits to Britain – during which many of his major works were premiered – form an important part of his adult career. His essentially conservative musical tastes set him apart from more adventurous musical contemporaries such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, Charles-Valentin Alkan and Hector Berlioz. The Leipzig Conservatory,[n 3] which he founded, became a bastion of this anti-radical outlook. After a long period of relative denigration due to changing musical tastes and antisemitism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his creative originality has been re-evaluated. He is now among the most popular composers of the Romantic era.
