EU imposes new sanctions on Belarus as migrant crisis escalates - BBC News
The European Union is to impose more sanctions on Belarus, aimed at everyone involved in facilitating the transport of people to the country's border with Poland.
Thousands of migrants are trapped on the border in temporary camps in freezing conditions.
The European Union has accused President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime of deliberately orchestrating the crisis, with migrants flying to Belarus from the Middle East and then being transported to the border of the EU.
Mishal Husain presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Steve Rosenberg in Belarus.

UK migrant crisis becoming the ‘number one issue’
The UK is facing a migrant crisis which is quickly becoming the “number one issue” in the mind of British voters, according to Brexit leader Nigel Farage.
More than 1,000 people crossed the English Channel in one day last week, with more than 23,5000 people having reached the UK using small boats this year.
“Something has got to give here,” Mr Farage told Sky News host Paul Murray.
“The French are not willing to cooperate at all, it politically suits President Macron to have a great big row with the British because of course he’s up for re-election next year, and we are the old enemy.
“And it kind of suits Boris Johnson too – rather than admitting his own failure to deal with this problem – to blame the French.
“But it’s all a diversion, because the truth is, France is a safe country, but the French do not put illegal immigrants up in four-star hotels with fresh linen provided every few days.
“We do that, they’re the pull factors, we’re the idiots and I think the British public are sussing this out.”
Poland turns water cannons on thousands of migrants as tensions rise at Belarus border
Polish security forces fired water cannons at migrants who threw rocks at guards manning the border with Belarus on Tuesday. Video from Polish authorities showed migrants also throwing bottles and logs across a barbed-wire border fence, and using sticks to try to break through.
Seven police were hurt in the violence, the latest in a crisis the European Union says is orchestrated by Belarus in retaliation for EU sanctions imposed over a crackdown on political protests—a charge that Minsk denies.
Up to 4,000 migrants are waiting in freezing forests on what is not only Poland's frontier, but is also the external border of the EU and NATO, the Western military alliance.

Europe's next domino: Will Polexit follow Brexit? | To the point
Who will blink first? Poland and the EU are playing ‘chicken’ – and the outcome will determine the future of both. Our guests: Wojciech Szymański (DW), Andreas Kluth (Bloomberg), Alexandra von Nahmen (DW)
The European Court of Justice slapped its highest ever fine – a million Euros a day - on Warsaw after the country’s Constitutional Tribunal ruled that the Polish constitution takes precedence over the EU treaty. The head of the EU-Commission says the fine is a legitimate response to a ruling that challenges the very basis of the European legal order. Blackmail, says Poland’s Prime Minister Morawiecki. It’s only the latest in ongoing tensions that include security on Poland’s easternmost border, where guards are accused of illegally pushing back undocumented migrants trafficked into Europe by Belarus. Do the EU partners approve of Poland's actions on its eastern border?

Migrant crisis: Calais migrants from Belarus say they were 'guided' over Polish border
‘WEAPONISED’ by Europe’s last dictator on the migrant trail from Belarus, Sandar Ahmed has finally reached the shores of the English Channel.
An unwitting pawn in a deadly game of geopolitics, the Iraqi was lured to the Eastern European nation on a tourist visa before being pushed across the EU’s border as part of a sinister ‘hybrid war’.
Now hoping to stow away on a lorry to Britain, Sandar, 32, told me: “Belorusian soldiers guided us across the border into Poland - but they were using us as political weapons.”
A pitiful human chess piece played by despot Alexander Lukashenko, Sandar fled violence in Iraq where, despite being a business graduate, he was unable to find a job.
Speaking after the sprawling Grande-Synthe migrant camp where he was living was raided by French cops, he revealed: “I arrived in Belarus legally on a tourist visa.
“Myself and other migrants were then taken to the border by minibus and shown where to wade across the Bug river into Poland.
“We were helped by Belorusian police and military. They stole money and mobile phones from some people.”
In a fresh headache for the Home Secretary Priti Patel, Sandar was far from the only migrant on the French coast who arrived via Belarus.
