Eskalation an der Grenze zwischen Belarus und Polen | DW Nachrichten Die gewalttätigen Konfrontationen zwischen polnischen Sicherheitskräften und Flüchtlingen an der Grenze zu Belarus sind eskaliert. Migranten schleuderten in der Nähe des Grenzübergangs Kuznica-Bruzgi Steine, Blendgranaten und Tränengaskanister auf die Sicherheitskräfte, wie die polnische Polizei und das Verteidigungsministerium in Warschau mitteilten. Auch hätten sie versucht, den Grenzzaun zu zerstören. Eine Grenzschutzbeamtin, ein Soldat und ein Polizist wurden demnach verletzt. Lithuania facing migration wave on Belarus border | DW News A growing number of African and Middle Eastern migrants have been illegally entering Lithuania from Belarus. The country says it is finding it hard to cope.

Lithuania and Belarus share a 680-kilometer (423-mile) border. In many places, the two countries are separated merely by low wooden fencing or narrow ditches. Overcoming these obstacles to cross into EU territory is child's play.

Until recently, this was not a serious problem in Lithuania. According to official figures, just 79 people entered the small Baltic state illegally in 2020 — most of them fleeing the authoritarian Lukashenko regime in neighboring Belarus.

So far this year, however, more than 2,500 people from Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and several African nations have arrived in Lithuania. Most of them came in the past two months.

Polish security forces use water cannons in clash with migrants | DW News Security forces in Poland on Tuesday deployed water cannons and used tear gas on migrants who attempted to cross the Polish-Belarusian border.

Poland's Border Guard said migrants had been throwing objects at security personnel. Limited access to the area due to Poland's state of emergency has presented a challenge to the media, in terms of independently verifying versions of events.

Russia has condemned Poland's use of force, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov telling media in Moscow: "The behavior of the Polish side is absolutely unacceptable." According to Russian media, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has discussed the humanitarian situation with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg lent his support to Poland, saying the defense alliance was concerned about Lukashenko's using migrants as a "hybrid tactic" against other countries.

Turkey stops flying citizens of Iraq, Syria, Yemen to Belarus | DW News Polish police say the body of a Syrian man has been found near the border with Belarus. At least 11 people have now died in the humanitarian crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. On Friday Turkey stopped citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen from flying to Belarus from its territory. Thousands of people are camped out on the Belarusian side of the border, in freezing conditions, trying to cross into bordering EU member states like Poland. Poland has deployed its army to stop them, and set up an exclusion zone that aid workers and journalists are barred from entering.
