Poland stops migrants from crossing Belarus border | DW News Tension is flaring between Poland and Belarus over the rise in migrants crossing into the EU. Troops from both countries have been deployed to the border. Poland has closed a border crossing and said it's prevented hundreds of people from crossing.

Talking to DW on Wednesday, the head of the center-right EPP bloc in the EU Parliament, Manfred Weber, called on Poland to be transparent about its response, and "accept assistance by the European forces," including Frontex. The German politician singled out Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for being foremost among key players in escalating the conflict.

Signs of deescalation along the border between Poland and Belarus | DW News There are signs of deescalation along the border between Poland and Belarus. People stranded on the Belarusian side have started boarding buses to take them away from the area.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has spoken with Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko twice this week and stressed that migrants should be given the chance to return to their home countries with the help of the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration.

Steve Alter, a spokesman for the German Interior Ministry, denied Berlin was planning to bring the migrants to Germany. The "road to Belarus is a dead end for most people who want to go to Germany. There are no plans to approve taking people in," he said.

Belarus is accused of pushing migrants towards its border with Poland to undermine security, a charge it denies.

On Monday, hundreds of migrants were blocked at a crossing by Polish troops.

A video filmed at the border by the BBC showed migrants sitting down on a road in front of barbed wire and Polish forces in a tense stand-off.

Those migrants came from a large makeshift camp at the Kuznica crossing, where thousands have settled in tents just inside Belarus.

German division and reunification - The Brandenburg Gate as national symbol | DW Documentary More than just a landmark in Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate is a national symbol. Like no other building, it stands for Germany’s division and reunification. But while everyone recognizes the Brandenburg Gate, hardly anyone knows much about it.

Built in 1793, the Brandenburg Gate received little attention at first. That changed when Napoleon triumphantly entered the city through the gate after his victory over Prussia in 1806 - and took its Quadriga to Paris as a spoil of war. After the charioteer returned to Berlin in 1814, the Brandenburg Gate became a national symbol of triumph.

Following the Second World War, the gate stood at the place where two opposing political systems met. Here, East and West confronted each other, from either side of the Wall. That changed in 1989, when people from East and West crossed the Wall at the Brandenburg Gate to embrace each other.
More than any other German monument, the Brandenburg Gate has been exploited again and again for the politics of power; its symbolism has been reinterpreted numerous times; and it has been used and abused as a backdrop by countless political groups.
